Steam School offers a comprehensive introduction to the operation and maintenance of steam traction engines. While not intended to qualify you as an experienced operator, it provides a foundational understanding of key topics. The weekend will consist of classroom discussion with ample hands-on instruction with full size and model engines.
Steam Theory & Engine Fundamentals
First learn the theory of steam power through live demonstrations. You'll also explore the major engine components, their functions, and how they work together to keep an engine running safely and efficiently.
Engine Handling & Operation
Gain hands-on experience on both full-size and model engines while working with multple qualified engineers. Hands-on experience includes engine fire-up, operating, and firing.
Boiler Construction
Understand the ins and outs of how a steam pressure vessel is constructed, discussing both original construction as well as modern repairs. Hear about pertinent boiler codes highlighting the NBIC and ASME standards.
Proper Boiler Maintenance
Gain experience in maintenance and repair techniques, including proper piping, valves, and accessories, as well as winter lay-up and boiler water treatment.
Emergency Procedures
Ensuring safe operation of steam traction engines is the highest priority. Discuss the essential steps to ensuring safe operation of a steam engine, including a live demonstration of a water glass break and emergency shut down.
